Former Apprentice Case Study – Steve Owens

Steve Owens left school aged 16 and started a 4-year electrical installation apprenticeship at Worcester Technical college, employed by Booth & Bomford Electrical Contractors Ltd, Evesham.
At 21 years old Steve started his own business, S D Owens Electrical and continued this business for a further 17 Years. After this, Steve became a Director at Huband Electrical Contractors Ltd of Evesham and also gained contract management 16th Edition BS7671 qualifications, managing in excess of 30 staff. Like many start-up businesses, Buzz Electrical Ltd had humble beginnings when it began in 1999. The business was based in a garden office attached to the family home of Steve and Sue Owens (pictured left) and it wasn’t long before the business rapidly grew and they moved to an industrial unit in Evesham. In 2015, following further growth of the business, it relocated to new centrally located offices in Evesham with a team of 27 staff.
Buzz Electrical Ltd celebrated its 20th Anniversary in 2019 and is one of the leading Electrical Contractors in the area specialising in Residential, Industrial and Commercial Electrical Services installations. The company continues to change with the times and now also installs electrical car charging points. Buzz’s double decade was marked by a visit by Nigel Huddlestone, MP for Mid Worcestershire.
As well as employing very experienced electricians, Buzz continue to ‘grow their own’ talent by taking on new apprentices to the business, thus following the example of their MD, Steve Owens. The company currently employ 5 members of the team who all started with the business as apprentices and who are now fully qualified electricians.
In 2018, the company was recognised at the Worcestershire Apprenticeship Awards for its continued development of apprentices by winning the Small Apprenticeship Employer of the Year and the Worcestershire Apprenticeship Employer of the Year.
