Carla Nash – Wyevale Nurseries

Why did you choose an apprenticeship?
I was already working at Wyevale Nurseries when I saw they were advertising for apprentices. I knew it would be a great opportunity to progress so I applied for the position. After an interview I was told I was successful and began the apprenticeship soon after. It was a very quick and easy process.
What is the best part of your apprenticeship?
I love learning lots of new skills and getting the opportunity to see all sides of a business and get plenty of professional experience. At the same time, I also love coming to college and socialising with other apprentices. We discuss our individual roles, the industry and the techniques we have developed. We learn at work, but we also learn from each other.
What skills have you learned since starting?
I’ve recently learned how to properly spray for pesticides, honed my composting skills and learned how to drive a tractor – it’s very different from driving a car! The more skills I learn, the more responsibility I’m given, which gives me the opportunity to learn even more.
What are you plans for the future?
I’m really happy in my job, so I would like to remain where I am and eventually progress to a more responsible role, such as a team leader and supervisor. The Level 3 apprenticeship offers me this opportunity, so I plan to continue further as an apprentice and increase my qualifications.
Do you have any advice for those considering an apprenticeship?
You’ve got to have a passion for the industry and want to learn as much as possible – and be prepared to work hard. If you’re interested in horticulture, then you’ve got to enjoy being outside and working in all types of weather conditions. It’s very rewarding, so I would definitely recommend it.
